Cheapest flights fly out on Wednesdays or Thursday, but try searching for flights on other days of the week as well. 7 day vacations seem to the cheapest (so that you fly in and out on Wednesday), but these prices have been going down recently, so you may be able to find discounts on other days of the week as well.

This June and July, a number of airlines are offering discount flights to Bangkok from San Francisco for $813. I just checked on a number of days in June, and All Nippon (based out of Japan) is offering one-stop flights between Bangkok and San Francisco with a quick stop over in Tokyo.

Air Canada is offering a number of roundtrip flights to Tokyo from San Francisco for $571. Most flights have a layover in Vancouver, which can be 5 hours long.

So this may seem like a lot initially, but Kunming is in the foothills of Tibet, and has a HUGE amount to offer for all types of travelers. Also, the US dollar goes very far once you’re there - three star hotels base rates go for about 40 bucks US.

In mid-May, Northwest Airlines is offering flights to Shanghai for $750 roundtrip, with a short stopover in Japan. The cheapest flights are on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
