So this may seem like a lot initially, but Kunming is in the foothills of Tibet, and has a HUGE amount to offer for all types of travelers.

Also, the US dollar goes very far once you’re there - three star hotels base rates go for about 40 bucks US.

Flight Details:

No restrictions currently. I searched on a number of days, evening, afternoon flights, and I keep on finding roundtrip fares between 1100 and 1300, but usually for about $1,150 roundtrip.

Airlines are China Airlines or Japan Air.

Things to Do in Kunming:

Kunming is the typical jump off point into Yunnan Provence in southern China. Yunnan is also neighbors with Cambodia, Vietnam, and Tibet, so there are many secondary destinations to choose from.

Here are some more attractions in Kunming.

Yunnan Stone Forest - Spectacular

Looking for more? Yunnan Stone Forrest reminds me of the likes of Joshua Tree National Park. Its been quietly tucked away in Yunnan Provence for the last couple thousand years, so not as many people know about it, but the surrounding beauty plus the Chinese architectural influence makes it a top draw in the area.

Also in Yunnan Provence are the cities of Lijiang and Dali, both with very distinct old town, having drawn from over 20 ethnic cultures and minorities, as well as the influence of European merchants traveling via the silk road.

Up even more West is the town of Shangri-La, at the cusp of Tibet.

A trip to Tibet will be a entirely new post. Stay tuned..
